24/01/2005: Following
a Cabinet decision at the annual January
Lekgotla held last week, Marthinus van Schalkwyk,
the Minister of Environmental Affairs and
Tourism, today confirmed that the Director-General
of the Department of Environmental Affairs
& Tourism, Dr. Crispian Olver, would
be leaving the Department at the end of
February. Dr. Olver has been one of the
most successful and effective Directors
General ever to serve South Africa, and
we are greatly pleased that he will be taking
up another new and challenging position,
said the Minister.
I will remain an ardent advocate for the
work of this Department. My commitment to
our new Minister was to oversee the transition
period which by the end of last year was
fully accomplished, said Dr Olver commenting
on his decision. This Department has in
place a really strong and committed management
team who are now ready to lead the Department
into the next phase.
This department and this portfolio is in
the fortunate position to have attracted
some of the most talented and enthusiastic
managers and leaders in the public service,
said the Minister. We offer our grateful
thanks and admiration to Dr Olver for more
than ten years of public service, along
with our best wishes for the next stage
of his career - his contribution to ensuring
the increased importance of environmental
affairs & tourism within Government
has been particularly noteworthy. His legacy
is a well-oiled departmental machine which
has positioned South Africa at the leading
edge of the global agenda in these matters.
