NEW DEPUTY DIRECTOR GENERAL
APPOINTED FOR MARINE AND COASTAL MANAGENENT

17/03/2005: The Minister
for Environmental Affairs and Tourism, Marthinus
van Schalkwyk, today confirmed that Cabinet
has approved the appointment of a new Deputy
Director General to head the Marine and Coastal
Management branch of the Department of Environmental
Affairs and Tourism. “Our Department is pleased
to announce that Dr. Monde Mayekiso, formerly
a Chief Director in the Marine and Coastal
Management Branch, has been appointed to this
key position.”
“This appointment comes at a very important
time, with the current process to allocate
long-term fishing rights underway,” said the
Minister. “Dr. Mayekiso's appointment represents
a comprehensive strengthening of our management
capacity, and will be augmented by other senior
appointments and restructuring in the near
future.”
Biographical Background:
Dr. Monde Mayekiso was born in 1954 and began
his career as a lecturer in Zoology at the
University of Fort Hare. He holds a B.Sc.,
and a B.Sc. (Hon) from the University of Fort
Hare, a M.Sc. from Rhodes University, and
a Ph.D. in Marine Estuarine and Environmental
Science from the University of Maryland in
the United States. He was appointed as the
Chief Director (Research) at Marine and Coastal
Management in 2000 and has most recently been
the Programme Manager at the Environmentek
division of the CSIR.
