11/05/2005 - Members of
FERAC, the Fisheries, Ecology and Recreation
Advisory Committee to Environment Agency Wales,
have visited (27/04/05) three projects completed
as part of the Welsh Assembly Government's
Sustainable Fisheries Programme.
The FERAC members saw:
How the Environment Agency has worked with
local anglers to restore the river habitat
of the River Conwy.
Major access improvements for disabled anglers
to the Clywedog Reservoir Fishery, Clocaenog
Forest.
A new £280,000 fish pass at Bontuchel,
which allows salmon and sea trout to migrate
upstream for the first time in over 100 years.
Between 2003 and 2005, the Welsh Assembly
Government has provided an additional £2.4
million funding for the Sustainable Fisheries
Programme led by Environment Agency Wales.
This funding has allowed the Agency to build
on its earlier work of making Wales a top
class destination for fishing holidays and
brings many economic benefits to rural areas
throughout Wales.
FERAC Chairman Pat O'Reilly said: 'The achievements
made by Environment Agency Wales and its partner
bodies have already made a noticeable difference
to fisheries in North Wales. Welsh Assembly
Government and Objective 1 funding investments
have opened up new and improved facilities
for healthy, outdoor recreation.'
During our visit to North Wales, we have
seen excellent examples of the Agency working
with local communities to protect and enhance
the wonderful natural assets we have in Wales.
All members of FERAC have been impressed by
the energy and enthusiasm of the many local
clubs, organisations and individuals who have
contributed to these projects.'
