19/05/2005 - The Environment
Agency has successfully prosecuted a man
from Kent after he illegally deposited waste
on land in Northfleet, Kent.
Mr John Charles Little appeared before Dartford
Magistrates on Wednesday 18 May 2005. He
was found guilty of illegally depositing
controlled waste in August 2004 and was
fined £1,000 and ordered to pay £600
costs.
The court heard that Environment Officers
and Kent Police attended Craylands Lane
in Northfleet after receiving a report of
8 wheeled tipper lorries entering the disused
site. Whilst there Officers witnessed a
vehicle loaded with waste being driven into
Craylands Lane. They followed the vehicle
into the site where it had already deposited
its load of construction and demolition
waste.
This successful prosecution is a result
of an Environment Agency campaign targeting
companies and individuals that carry out
large scale and serious flytipping and also
activities such as those being carried out
by John Charles Little. The Environment
Agency will also carry out legal action
on sites that produce the flytipped waste
or those that receive it.
After the hearing, Environment Officer
James May, said:
"Companies involved in the waste industry
must ensure that the activity they carry
out is fully permitted and, if needed, they
have a valid licence. This enables conditions
to be set that will minimise pollutants
and ensure harm is not being caused to the
environment.
"Activities such as those being carried
out by John Charles Little have the potential
to harm the environment so we take these
offences very seriously. We hope this prosecution
is a warning to others that those operating
illegally will not get away with it."
