05/05/2005 - The Environment
Agency is continuing with work on the multi-million
pound Cheltenham Flood Alleviation scheme.
In Old Bath Road Car park our work will replace
an existing culvert. This will allow increased
flow capacity. The new concrete culvert will
be 2.4m x 3.6m in size extending for approximately
40m. The culvert will be lined on the invert
with a layer of gravel to improve the habitat
for fish to live in.
In order for this work to be carried out
Bath Road Car Park will be closed for five
months.
Works are also planned to commence at the
‘Gap culvert’ that extends from Rodney Road
car park to Regent Street. Our planned works
here are to increase the capacity of the existing
culvert by excavating the existing riverbed,
which will then be lined with a new reinforced
concrete channel.
This will involve the partial closure of
Rodney Road car park (approximately 11 spaces)
to enable access and working space for entry
into the culvert.
Work is part of the agreed scheme to provide
effective flood protection for a flood which
has a 1% chance of occurring every year, referred
to as a 1 in 100 year flood.
Whilst works are being carried out we aim
to minimise the impact of the car park closure
on Cheltenham residents. Our working hours
will be within agreed times and operations
monitored closely to ensure best practice.
Our works are part of the Cheltenham Flood
Alleviation scheme, which will protect over
600 buildings, and is part of the ongoing
programme to ensure defences operate at their
optimum level when needed.
