20/06/2005 - Two Cornish
flood defence schemes have been short-listed
for a series of prestigious national awards.
Sladesbridge Flood Defence Scheme between
Bodmin and Wadebridge recently won the Institution
of Civil Engineers South West Region Merit
Award as an example of excellence within the
engineering profession.
On Thursday (June 16) the £2.4 million
Sladebridge scheme and a £800,000 Environment
Agency flood defence scheme at nearby Boscastle
were short-listed for the British Construction
Industry awards for small civil engineering
projects.
As part of the short-listing, the two projects
are also eligible for at least three other
awards including The Prime Minister’s Better
Public Building Award that recognises excellence
in design quality and is made annually to
a new building project of any size, commissioned
by or on behalf of central or local government
or a grant-aided organisation.
Sladesbridge and Boscastle were short-listed
along with 13 other projects ranging from
a £70 million music centre in Gateshead
to a new stretch of A470 road between Cardiff
and Clan Conwy in Wales dubbed ‘the greenest
road in Britain.’
"Sladesbridge is an excellent example
of a fully integrated flood defence scheme
that protects people from the misery of flooding
and works harmoniously with the natural and
built environment," said Richard Cresswell,
Regional Director of the Environment Agency.
"We are delighted that Boscastle has
also been nominated for an award in recognition
of the high standard of work achieved in wake
of the flooding when an Agency team and professional
partners worked closely with the local community
to build a flood defence scheme that will
give residents and visitors much greater security,"
said Richard Cresswell.
The winners of both the British Construction
Industry Awards and Prime Minister’s Better
Public Building Award will be announced in
October. Judges will take into account such
factors as value for money, quality of design
and construction, performance against prediction
and client satisfaction before selecting the
overall BCI award winner.
The BCI awards are promoted by New Civil
Engineer magazine, Thomas Telford and the
Architects Journal with sponsorship from industry
organisations.
