22/06/2005 - The Environment
Agency’s Lower Severn area office will attend
the Pilning and Severn Beach Parish Information
Day on 25 June 2005 to offer advice and information
to local people so that they may be better
prepared and aware of the risks posed by flooding.
There is much that people can do to avoid
the damage and distress flooding can cause.
The Environment Agency has information and
advice that will help. Officers from the Lower
Severn area office will be on hand at Trinity
Hall, Redwick Road, from 10am until 4pm on
Saturday to provide advice and answer queries
and we encourage people to come and talk to
us.
Around 5 million people, in 2 million properties,
live in flood risk areas in England and Wales.
Changes in our climate, such as more severe
storms and wetter winters, will increase that
risk. The Environment Agency has an important
role in warning people about the risk of flooding,
and in reducing the likelihood of flooding
from rivers and the sea.
Our flood risk management activities can
reduce the probability of flooding from rivers
and the sea through the management of land,
river systems and flood and coastal defences.
We also work to reduce the impact of floods
through effective land use planning, regulation,
flood warning and emergency responses. However,
flooding is a natural hazard and flood risk
can not be eliminated, only reduced.
While we do our best to reduce the severity
and impact of flooding, it is vital we tell
people how to protect themselves if flooding
does occur.
For people who are unable to attend the event
advice is available from Floodline on 0845
988 1188 or on our website www.environment-agency.gov.uk.
