02/06/2005 - Local people
can join in the World Environment Day celebrations
in Exeter this weekend with special events
by the Environment Agency.
On Saturday (June 4) the World Environment
Day trailer will be in Bedford Square and
visitors can help save the planet by promising
to take simple actions including:
have a shower instead of a bath – saving
45 litres of water and the energy to heat
it
turn off the tap while cleaning your teeth
– saving another 15 litres of water
only fill the kettle with the amount of water
you need – reducing carbon emissions by 20
grams a day.
Over a year these changes would save 27,375
litres of water and reduce carbon emissions
by over 7 kilos. By cycling or walking to
work it is possible to save a massive 1,296
kilos of carbon emissions.
The Environment Agency will be joined by
South West Water, Exeter City Council, and
Devon County Council. There will be special
World Environment Day goodies including ‘Bags
for Life’ kindly donated by Marks and Spencers,
Tesco, Sainsburys and Waitrose.
And at Sainsburys in Alphington on Sunday
(June 5) the Environment Agency trailer will
be in the car park giving a further chance
for people to make a pledge and collect their
World Environment Day goodies.
"World Environment Day is an international
event held every year on June 5 and was started
by the United Nations in 1972," explained
Jane Fletcher-Peters for the Environment Agency.
"Local residents can really start to
make a difference to the environment by pledging
to make simple changes.
"We hope as many people as possible
will join us in the city over the weekend
to make their personal pledges to help improve
the environment."
Other green initiatives in Devon this weekend
include a Nature Reserve Day organised by
the Devon Wildlife Trust on Sunday, June 5
at Dunsdon, North Devon (further details tel:
01392 279244) and on Saturday, June 4 at Kennick
Reservoir near Christow visitors can learn
to fly fish (contact Diane Holland at the
Environment Agency on 01392 316032).
