24/06/2005 - Work on new
flood walls on the River Witham in Grantham
is to be started by the Environment Agency
in mid July.
The walls, costing £165,000 , will be
built between Harrow Street and Bridge End
Road and will be between 600 and 900 mm high.
They will be faced with brickwork to blend
with existing buildings.
They are designed to locally improve the
standard of protection against flooding of
properties in the Witham Place and Harrow
Street area, which includes sheltered housing.
They will ensure a consistent standard of
defence against flooding from the river throughout
the town, of less than 1% or 1 in 100 years.
During the construction work the riverside
footpath will be closed for periods as a safety
precaution and suitable diversion routes will
be signed. Work is expected to be completed
by mid September.
The Environment Agency apologises for any
inconvenience caused during this construction
work that will benefit the local community.
Ian Russell, Flood Defence Manager said:
"As part of a continuous review of flood
risk in urban areas, we identified that some
localised river bank levels were slightly
lower than elsewhere in the town.
"We have successfully secured national
funding to complete the improvement works,
which will give a good overall standard to
Grantham."
