22/06/2005 - The Australian
Minister for the Environment and Heritage,
Senator Ian Campbell, handed petitions from
Australian school children to the chairman
of the International Whaling Commission
(IWC) at its meeting in Ulsan in South Korea
today.
Senator Campbell had been requested to
deliver the petitions to the IWC by students
at the Hurlstone Agricultural High School
and the Picnic Point Public School, both
in NSW .
The petitions opposed the re-opening of
commercial whaling, which is being proposed
by Japan, Norway and Iceland.
Senator Campbell said he was proud to ensure
the voices of young Australians from places
like Picnic Point, Revesby, East Hills,
Padstow, Milperra, Alfords Point, Wattle
Grove, Fairfield, and many other suburbs
will be heard at this vital meeting in South
Korea.
“It is important that the generation of
adults who have responsibility for the future
of whales know the views of the next generation,”
Senator Campbell said.
“I’m sure young Australians would find many
young people in Japan, Norway and Iceland
support their call to conserve the world’s
whales.”
