1.4 MILLION FOR RESEARCH
TO IMPROVE AUSTRALIAN AIR QUALITY

20/09/2005 - The Australian
Government is calling for research proposals
to help design new ways to improve the nation's
air quality.
The Minister for the Environment and Heritage,
Senator Ian Campbell, said the call for proposals
was the first step in rolling out $1.4 million
of air quality research under the Sustainable
Cities Clean Air Research Programme.
"It is essential for us to have high
quality research if we are to understand and
manage the impacts of air pollution in Australia,"
Senator Campbell said.
"This programme will provide funding
for practical projects that will help decide
future policies and approaches to reducing
air pollution and its impacts on community
health, particularly in our major cities.
"The programme will build on existing
Australian and international air quality research
by helping to fill gaps in the understanding
of the major air pollutants and their sources."
Senator Campbell said up to $1.4 million would
be available over 2005-2008 for research organisations,
individuals and other governments to conduct
research into:
• major sources of air pollution in Australia
• levels of pollutants to which communities,
including sensitive individuals, are exposed
• the best means to manage impacts
"We are calling for Expressions of Interest
for high quality research proposals right
now and encourage researchers working in the
field to find out more," Senator Campbell
said.
