12/01/2006 - Do you think the Environment Agency should
be doing things differently to maintain, improve and develop
flood risk management in Lincolnshire? Are you particularly
concerned that your point of view, or that of your community
or organisation isn't being taken into account?
The Environment Agency is looking for someone new to join
its Anglian (Northern) Regional Flood Defence Committee.
The committee has overall responsibility for Environment
Agency flood risk management and land drainage functions
and recommends the amount of money local councils contribute
to Environment Agency flood defence work.
During 2005, the committee has managed flood risk for an
area including 6,500 kilometres of main rivers, 680 kilometres
of coastline and 2,100 kilometres of raised defences. It
has worked to influence regional government to help prevent
inappropriate development in floodplains and has objected
to 681 planning applications, with 88% accepted by the local
authority. 13 flood defence schemes were completed, increasing
the level of protection to 6,748 properties.
2006 promises to be an interesting year, with difficult
decisions to be made on coastal management and the pressures
of housing and industrial development.
Nominees from organisations and individuals of all backgrounds
are being sought to ensure the committee reflects the environment
and diverse population the Environment Agency serves.
Committee members don't receive a salary, but it is a good
opportunity for self-development and gives a great sense
of achievement. Travel expenses are reimbursed, with meetings
generally held at the Environment Agency Regional Office
in Peterborough.
Organisations wishing to nominate a person, or individuals
wishing to nominate themselves (or another) for membership
of the committee, should telephone Bryan Hutchinson or Martin
Whelan on 01733 464328 between 9.30am and 4.30pm (Monday
to Friday) and we will send more information. All nominations
should be submitted by 31 January 2006. |
