13/01/2006 - As a public body we must get value for the
taxpayer. If the residents would work with us to allow public
access through the island - as part of a new footbridge
across the Thames - there would be no fee. However if the
residents want to retain private and exclusive access, they
must pay a fair rate, which will be the first increase in
the fee for more than 25 years.
But we are concerned about emergency access for the islanders,
and we have agreed a system with the Surrey Ambulance Service,
which enables paramedics to gain immediate access to the
island. We will continue to monitor this arrangement and
will always follow advice from the Ambulance Service.
We are sympathetic with the islanders, but our primary
concern is for the health and safety of everyone who comes
onto our yard. We understand it is difficult for the residents,
but they do have alternative means of getting deliveries
to their homes without having to access our yard. |
