03/02/2006 - The local environment is moderate polluted
at the goldmine Nalunaq in South Greenland . That is the
result of investigations conducted in 2005 of the environmental
pollution around the mine.
The results in 2005 are similar to those from investigations
NERI conducted in the area before mine start in 2004. Compared
to 2004 the impacted marine area is smaller. This could
be because the stockpiled fine-ground ore were removed from
the area prior to the 2005 monitoring study. Element concentrations
in 2005 were similar to 2004, except for arsenic in the
camp area where the level has increased. It is possible
to reduce the pollution in the area by reducing the dust
from the road and the camp area. Dust from the road can
be reduced by watering the road during dry periods. Furthermore
use of waste rock for road maintenance should be reconsidered. |
