06/02/2006 - A fly-tipping
hotspot in Kirton, near Boston, has been
causing concern for the Environment Agency,
which is keen to find any information leading
to the people responsible.
Several tipper-truck loads of rubbish,
including hundreds of tonnes of clay and
plastic sheeting, were dumped on private
land at the Old Station Yard, Kirton between
Christmas and the New Year – the site of
a serious tyre fire back in 2003.
But since then, other people have started
to use the site to dump their own rubbish
and the Environment Agency is keen to put
a stop to it.
The site in Kirton is next to the busy
A16 trunk road and it is believed that the
tipper trucks will have travelled along
that road, and may have been seen by several
people. It is possible that the waste was
dumped after dark, to avoid drawing attention
from passing motorists.
If anyone has any information that will
help them track down the people responsible
for the large fly-tipping over the holiday
period they should contact 08708 506506.
The Agency is particularly interested to
hear from local construction or sites who
may have used a contractor to dispose of
several wagon-loads of clay.
Environment Agency spokesperson Craig Wood
said: ‘Fly-tipping on this scale is a serious
crime. Up and down the country landowners
are facing costly bills for clearing dumped
waste whilst fly-tippers pocket the money
that they would otherwise have to pay to
dispose of it properly. It isn’t fair and
we try to prosecute fly-tippers wherever
possible.
‘Waste should always be taken to a properly-licensed
site or to an waste carrier authorised by
the Environment Agency.’
Nationally it costs about £10,000
a day to clear up fly-tipped waste.
Under the recently-introduced Clean Neighbourhoods
and Environment Act the offence of fly-tipping
carries an increased penalty in magistrates’
courts of up to £50 000 and the maximum
prison sentence for fly-tipping non-hazardous
waste has increased from two years to five
years.
