3-Apr-2006 - The Environment
Agency is inviting people concerned about flood
risk in the River Adur catchment to help identify
how it can be managed.
A scoping report by the Environment
Agency on the River Adur Catchment Flood Management
Plan is now available for public consultation.
Catchment Flood Management Plans,
required under the EU Water Framework Directive,
are large-scale plans that explore and identify
how flood risk for an entire river catchment can
be managed long-term. The River Adur Catchment
Flood Management Plan covers the whole area from
Billingshurst in the west to beyond Burgess Hill
in the east, spreading south to the coast falling
between Worthing in the east to Rottingdean in
the west.
The plan is in the scoping
report stage and this phase will help the Environment
Agency fully understand flood risk in the catchment.
It will also allow anyone with an interest in
the area to contribute to the plan. All comments
must be sent by 30 June 2006.
Andrew Gilham, Sussex Area Flood
Risk Manager for the Environment Agency, said:
"This report has been complied
in partnership with a number of organisations
to further understanding of the catchment and
flood risk areas. An important part of this report
is public consultation that allows residents of
the catchment to express their views and concerns
on the River Adur. All contributions or comments
are welcome.
Following a three month consultation
period, the next stage of the plan is to assess
the best management practice for the area. With
further work and understanding it is our aim to
adopt a strategy that will manage flood risk effectively
and reduce risk for people, property, business
and the environment."
Members of the public can inspect
