19-Apr-2006 - The Environment
Agency is reviewing the authorisations for the
nuclear power station at Dungeness. Members of
the public are invited to view and comment on
the proposals.
The Environment Agency regulates
the disposal of radioactive waste from Dungeness,
by issuing the authorisation to the site. These
authorisations set conditions that the site must
operate within.
The Environment Agency regularly
reviews nuclear authorisations and is currently
reviewing the authorisations issued to six power
stations owned by British Energy Generation Limited.
This review includes Dungeness B Power Station
and will look at how this and the other five sites
minimise radioactive waste disposal and how they
are managed, operated and maintained.
The Environment Agency has prepared
new proposals for the future authorisation it
issues to Dungeness Power Station. These aim to
minimise radioactive waste and ensure that the
power station continues to be well managed, ensuring
that the environment and human health is protected.
A summary of these proposals
is available at:www.environment-agency.gov.uk/benar.
Anyone wishing to comment can do so before 7 July
2006. The Environment Agency will publish the
final decisions on the future authorisation of
the power station during the winter of 2006/2007.
The Environment Agency is also
holding two public drop-in sessions. These will
be hosted at the Assembly Rooms in New Romney
on Wednesday 26 April from 3pm to 8pm and at the
Community Hall at Lydd on Thursday April 27 from
3pm to 8pm. Local people can come and look at
the proposals, ask questions and give their views.
Anyone interested in attending these sessions
should contact the Environment Agency on 08708
506 506.
In addition to Dungeness, the
Environment Agency is also reviewing authorisations
for 5 other sites:
Hinkley Point B (Cannington,
Somerset)
Heysham 1 and 2 (nr. Morecambe
, Lancashire)
Sizewell B (Leiston, Suffolk)
Hartlepool (Hartlepool, Teesside)
The Environment Agency has worked
closely with the Food Standards Agency and the
Nuclear Installation’s Inspectorate on the development
of the proposals for the future.
