19-Apr-2006 - Environment
Agency Wales representatives along with David
Hanson MP and Sandy Mewies AM formally opened
the Mold Flood Alleviation Scheme on Friday 7
April 2006.
Representatives from Flintshire
County Council, Mold Town Council and local residents
were also present to witness the opening of this
much-needed scheme for the Mold community. A plaque
was also unveiled to commemorate the occasion.
In November 2000, a period of
extreme rainfall caused the River Alyn to flood
many homes and businesses in Mold. The new standard
of protection for Mold provided by this scheme
is 1 in 200 years. The town’s previous level of
defence provided by earth embankments was approximately
1 in 25 years.
The scheme has been constructed
in two phases. Phase 1’s aim was to raise and
improvedefences upstream of Leadmills Bridge.
Phase 2 included channel widening and landscaping
work downstream of Leadmills Bridge in order to
improve the rivers’ ability to cope with floodwaters.
Welsh Assembly Government, the
Dee & Clwyd Local Flood Defence Committee,
Flintshire County Council and a private developer
funded the scheme.
Meic Davies, Area Flood Risk
Manager, said: "We are delighted that this
important scheme has now been completed and that
the residents of Mold can enjoy a significantly
increased standard of protection from flooding.
These works will also complement the flood warning
arrangements that we operate for the River Alyn."
David Hanson, MP for Delyn,
said: "I was delighted to officially open
the Mold Flood Alleviation Scheme, with local
AM Sandy Mewies. Mold was one of several communities
that experienced major flooding in recent years,
something I saw at first hand when I travelled
around the town and spoke to many local residents
affected by the floodwaters.
This vital scheme, funded by
the Government through the Assembly and Flintshire
County Council will greatly improve Mold protection
against flooding in the future. Indeed, reliability
will be improved so that flooding risk is only
once every 200 years, a significant improvement
on recent years. I pay tribute to everyone involved
in this important project.
