18-May-2006 - Peter Holmes,
flood risk manager for the Environment Agency
said: "It’s great news that Ryedale council
may be able to contribute £1 million towards
a flood alleviation scheme for Pickering.
"Hopefully this money will
attract other funding and we can build a scheme
to protect this town.
"The money we have already
spent on the scheme isn’t lost and means we will
have very little work to do on the design.
"There is still a long
way to go, but we are hopeful that this boost
from Ryedale will help secure flood protection
for the people of Pickering.
"We will continue to work
closely with Ryedale and North Yorkshire councils
and the people of Pickering to promote the scheme."
The Environment Agency and the
Yorkshire Regional Flood Defence Committee (YRFDC)
have always maintained that Pickering would continue
to feature in their flood defence plans for the
region.
This commitment was reinforced
when in January YRFDC allocated £50,000
of local levy money so that Environment Agency
officers could help to promote a scheme for the
town.
