On Monday 5 June Environment
Agency staff at York on Clifton Moor will be contributing
to World Environment Day efforts by leaving their
cars at home and finding more environmentally
friendly ways of getting to work.
Throughout the day on Monday
there will be no cars in the car park at Coverdale
House – just an awful lot of bicycles!
The regional focus of World
Environment Day this year is small businesses.
Green business packs have been sent to local businesses,
encouraging them to look at their environmental
impact and consider action such as the implementation
of a car sharing scheme, or empty car park days.
External Relations Officer Kathryn
Cook said: “We felt it was important to lead by
example. We’ll find more environmentally friendly
ways to get to work that day in the hope that
other businesses will do the same. Particularly
in York we are lucky to have a fantastic public
transport network and many cycle paths, so it
shouldn’t be too inconvenient for people”.
The empty car park on 5 June
is the first step in encouraging alternative forms
of transport. The Environment Agency is hoping
that staff will use World Environment Day to try
out the other ways of travelling to work and then
continue to use these methods where possible in
future.
Numerous small businesses on
the Clifton Moor industrial estate have agreed
to meet with Environment Agency staff to look
more closely at how they can reduce their environmental
impact.
In 2005, more than 200 businesses
took part in World Environment Day activities.
