2006 - The Australian Bureau of Meteorology will
lead a forum in Brisbane on Thursday 20 July on
how to better understand the uncertainties of
weather and climate predictions, The Hon Greg
Hunt MP, Parliamentary Secretary with responsibility
for the Bureau of Meteorology and Senator the
Hon. Santo Santoro, Senator for Queensland announced
today.
Mr Hunt said the forum would
look at the inherent uncertainties that exist
in climate and weather forecasts, so that agriculturalists
can better integrate the science into their decision-making
processes.
"This forum brings together a broad cross-section
of the Queensland community and discusses how
to make the best use of weather and climate information
- such as the Bureau of Meteorology’s seasonal
outlooks and rainfall forecasts."
"The Bureau is holding
similar forums in rural and urban areas across
the country and I commend Senator Santoro for
his commitment to improving weather services and
information in Queensland."
Senator Santoro said he welcomed the information
session in Brisbane.
"The forum has application across the community
and will be especially informative for the agricultural
sector and those interested in how climate is
affecting the water supply - an issue that is
of great concern to both government and residents
across Queensland at the moment.
The 3rd Annual Queensland Agriculture,
Climate and Weather Services Forum has been organised
by the Australian Bureau of Meteorology in conjunction
with CSIRO, the Queensland Government Departments
of Primary Industries and Fisheries and Natural
Resources and Mines, Brisbane City Council, SunWater,
the Australian Water Association and the Queensland
Farmers' Federation.
Representatives of the State
Government, SunWater, the Brisbane City Council,
the Queensland Farmers’ Federation, AgForce Queensland,
Queensland rural producer associations and the
farming community in general are expected to attend
the forum.
