Head
Office Press Office - 11-Oct-2006 - The Environment
Agency welcomes Natural England as an important
new partner to improve and protect the environment
and create a better place.
Natural England brings together
the environmental land management functions of
the Rural Development Service, the landscape,
access and recreation elements of the Countryside
Agency and the responsibilities of English Nature.
The new organisation’s responsibilities
include biodiversity, wildlife and landscape,
delivering sustainable farming and land management,
protecting Sites of Special Scientific Interest,
and promoting access and recreation.
"We wish Natural England
every success in delivering its important work.
Having one single organisation will mean a more
consistent approach to wildlife and conservation.
This new Agency will help us push environmental
issues higher up everybody’s agenda, and we can
tackle problems together in a more joined up way,"
said Environment Agency Chief Executive, Barbara
Young.
"We look forward to working
with Natural England. We look to them to use their
powers and resources to help us tackle the big
challenges of climate change and pollution. For
example, Natural England’s Environmental Stewardship
grants are essential to help farmers avoid any
damage to water quality.
"We in turn will
use our work in environmental protection, water
resources and flood risk management to protect
wildlife habitats and create a better environment
for people to enjoy, in town and country,"
Barbara Young said.
