Holly
Smith - 2-Nov-2006 - The Environment Agency will
meet Charlotte Atkins MP, local Councillors and
members of the Cheddleton Resident’s Action Group
(CRAG) on Friday 3rd November to discuss the formation
of a local liaison group to help resolve environmental
problems around John Pointon and Sons Limited.
John Pointon and Sons Limited
is the UK’s largest animal rendering plant, and
one of the largest in Europe. It is now regulated
for emissions to air, water and land by the Environment
Agency under the European Integrated Pollution
Prevention and Control regime.
This meeting is part of our
effort to engage with local residents and listen
to their views and concerns about the John Pointon
and Sons rendering plant.
Dr David Hudson, Environment
Manager responsible for John Pointon and Sons
Limited said: "We appreciate that some local
residents have had a very unhappy experience of
the Pointon’s plant in the past. However, now
that we regulate the site under this comprehensive
regime I think that there is a real chance to
see improvements for the environment and local
residents."
"As part of that process
we want to see if local residents including CRAG
will be able to participate in a forum to discuss
the way forward where the company can explain
their plans and we can discuss problems face to
face."
"We want to help
rebuild trust between the company and the community
and we hope that all interested parties, including
elected representatives of local people and Staffordshire
Moorlands District Council Environmental Services,
will be able to take part in the forum when it
is set up."
