2006 - Two of Kakadu's natural and cultural jewels
are being revamped as part of the reinvigoration
of its visitor offerings.
Expressions of Interest have
been invited today from tour operators able to
develop new experiences in Kakadu's iconic Twin
Falls and Jim Jim region.
The invitation seeks proposals
that help visitors appreciate Kakadu's rich Indigenousculture
dating back tens of thousands of years.
"This is an outstanding
opportunity for tour operators to contribute to
the World Heritage values of one of Australia's
greatest national parks," the Parliamentary
Secretary to the Minister for the Environment
and Heritage, Greg Hunt, said today.
"The Twin Falls and Jim
Jim areas are accessible by road only in the dry
season, typically May to November. We are interested
in proposals that sustain the environment and
help support the lifestyle of the park's Aboriginal
traditional owners.
"Possible new ventures
could include safari camps, cultural activities,
bushwalks, bus or boat shuttle services and tourism
booking services.
"But we are not being prescriptive
- it's over to the tourism industry to come up
with imaginative ideas of sustainable businesses
which will put Kakadu at the forefront of the
world stage," Mr Hunt said.
Kakadu's Jim Jim/ Twin Falls
area is renowned for its awesome escarpment, punctuated
by massive waterfalls in the wet season and stunning
monsoon bushwalks in the dry. It is the traditional
home of the Djok in association with the Murrumburr
people, who welcome visitors who will respect
and protect their culture and country.
Brisbane firm, Enmark Business
Advisors, is managing the Expression of Interest
in two stages. In stage one, which closes on 15
December, proponents must demonstrate their qualifications
and experience, and outline a viable business
model that is environmentally friendly and culturally
sensitive. Proponents who meet the selection criteria
may be invited to a Request for Proposal, which
will require a more detailed level of submission.
