Francesca Glyn-Jones - 7-Aug-2007
- Staff from the Environment Agency will be
talking to residents in Collingham next week
who were affected by the recent flooding.
The team, based in York, is holding the meeting
at Collingham Village Hall from 2pm to 8pm
on Wednesday, August 15. The aim is to give
residents an opportunity to learn more about
the flooding, and for officers to gather information
about how the flooding affected specific areas.
The meeting is one of a series of drop-ins
which is being organised by the Environment
Agency across the region.
Area flood risk manager Thomasin Turner said:
“The more that we know about how the flooding
affected different homes and streets then
the more we can do to find ways of protecting
people.
“We are urging people to come along with
photographs, and any other documentation which
we can use to plot the path and the times
of the flooding more specifically. We will
add the data to our own records and return
to Collingham later in the year to update
residents on the results of our review.”
Her team is organising around five drop-in
sessions across North Yorkshire and events
have already been held in Pickering and Ripon.
Staff will be letting people know when and
where other drop-in sessions will be held
in the next few weeks.
Heavy rain fell in the Collingham area over
June. The average rainfall for June is around
55 millimetres in this area, but the nearest
rain gauge recorded four times the amount
of rainfall we would normally expect to see.
Between June 14-15 more than 80 millimetres
of rainfall was recorded, followed by 60 millimetres
on June 25.
The Environment Agency is responsible for
flood protection from main rivers and designated
smaller watercourses.
It also issues flood warnings and watches
to people in certain flood risk areas who
have signed up to receive the service.
The Environment Agency has gauges on many
main rivers across Yorkshire which helps officers
monitor water levels and the likelihood of
flooding.

Environment Agency Invites Contributions
to Flood Plans
Ruth Noden - 6-Aug-2007 - The Environment
Agency is inviting people concerned about
flood risk in the South East Hampshire catchment
to help identify how it can be managed.
The Environment Agency has completed a draft
report for the South East Hampshire Catchment
Flood Management Plan. This report is now
available for public consultation.
Catchment Flood Management Plans are large-scale
plans that explore and identify how flood
risk for an entire river catchment can be
managed long-term. The South East Hampshire
Catchment Flood Management Plan covers the
whole catchment – an area between West Meon
in the North, to Havant in the East, Portsmouth
in the South, to Hedge End in the West.
The plan is in the final consultation stage.
It will allow anyone with an interest in the
area to contribute to the plan. All comments
must be sent before 26 October 2007.
Tim Kermode, the Hampshire Area Flood Risk
Manager, said, "We have compiled this
report in partnership with a number of organisations
to best understand the catchment and flood
risk. An important part of this report is
public consultation and we encourage residents
of the catchment to express their views and
concerns for South East Hampshire. All contributions
are welcome.
“Following a three-month consultation period
the report will identify the most appropriate
management options for the area. It is our
aim to adopt a set of policies that will enable
us to manage flood risk effectively and reduce
flood risk for people, property and the environment."
Members of the public can inspect copies
of the South East Hampshire Catchment Flood
Management Plan at Hayling Island Library,
Gosport Discovery Centre, Horndean Library,
Havant Library, Waterlooville Library, Emsworth
Library and Leigh Park Library. It is also
available on the Environment Agency website
at http://www.environment-agency.gov.uk/regions/southern/290158/?lang=_e.
