The
Environment Agency will tomorrow (Tuesday,
7 April) launch a consultation on its draft
decision to issue an environmental permit
for a non-hazardous waste incinerator at
Saltend in East Yorkshire.
A drop-in session is
being held on Thursday, 16 April, where
Environment Agency officers will be available
to discuss the draft permit at the Haven
Arms, Havenside, off Sheriff Highway, Hedon,
HU12 8HH from 3pm until 8pm. Residents are
welcome to call in at any time between those
times.
In October last year
we received an application from Waste Recycling
Group (WRG) Limited for a permit for the
plant at Queen Elizabeth Dock, Hull. This
plant, also known as an energy from waste
facility, burns waste at high temperatures,
with the energy used to generate electricity.
The plant needs a permit
from the Environment Agency. This permit
will make sure that it operates without
causing significant harm to the environment
and human health.
Having considered the
application, all other relevant information
and responses to our consultation on the
application, we are now minded to grant
the permit, which would, if issued, apply
strict conditions to the operation of the
plant.
However, we have not
yet finally made our decision and we now
wish to consult the public on our position.
The consultation period will last for 20
working days, ending Thursday, 7 May, allowing
people to give their views on the draft
permit and explanatory decision document.
Leigh Sayers, at the
Environment Agency said: “It’s our role
to make sure that incinerators are operated
to meet strict environmental standards and
the conditions of their environmental permits.
“We consulted widely
on WRG’s application in January this year
and a number of comments were received.
We’ve now assessed the application and reached
a draft decision, having taken into account
all of the comments.”
Copies of all documents
relating to this installation are available
to view at the public registers, which are
held at:
• The Environment Agency,
Phoenix House, Global Avenue, Leeds, LS11

Upon Hull, HU9 1DB
You can inspect these
registers free of charge during normal office

of documents on the register can be obtained.
A charge may be made to cover the costs
of copying.

draft permit and original application documents
can also be viewed at the following locations:

Gutter Lane East, Willerby, Hull, HU10 6DE

The draft permit is
also available to view at our website under
‘consultations’:

Should we ultimately
decide to issue the permit, this would be
only the first stage in our regulation of
the plant. When the facility is up and running,
we will monitor its environmental performance,
including emissions to air, to ensure that
permit conditions are not breached.
Any comments on the
details of the draft permit should be made
in writing by 7 May 2009 to:

The Environment Agency
is bringing its flood awareness stand to
the Felixstowe Spa Pavilion Car Park on
Friday 17th April and is urging as many
people as possible to attend this free event
to find out what measures they can take
to protect their home or business from flooding.
Taking place at Spa
Pavilion Felixstowe between 10am and 4pm,
representatives from the Environment Agency
will be on hand to provide one-to-one advice
for local residents, including practical
help on preparing for a flood, what to do
when one occurs and how to stay safe.
Attendees will be able
to find out if their home is at risk from
flooding by using the Environment Agency
Flood Maps, and register for our free Floodline
Warnings Direct service. We provide flood
warnings by telephone, mobile, e-mail, fax
or pager whenever a flood is forecast in
the area. In addition, staff will be demonstrating
how simple it is to pull together a flood
kit to be prepared in case of flooding.
On the day, there will
be a display of artwork from Langer Road
Primary School, who have been looking at
the 1953 Floods as part of their studies.
They have been looking at designing a grab
bag that can be put together to ensure that
they have all the essential things they
would need to prepare for a flood.
David Kemp, Flood Incident
Management, Anglian Region said: “We are
working hard to reduce flood risk for people
in Felixstowe, but there is lots more that
people can do to protect themselves and
to minimise the damage and distress that
floods can cause. We hope people will come
and talk to us and we encourage people to
sign up to our free flood warning service.”
