Environment Agency
Wales has announced its ‘draft decision’
to grant Viridor Waste Management Limited
an environmental permit for the proposed
energy from waste facility in Trident Park,
Splott, Cardiff.
This ‘draft decision’
will now be followed by a further 28 days
of public consultation before the Agency
expects to make its final decision.
The Agency is holding
a public information session at the STAR
Centre in Splott on Friday 30th July between
2pm and 7pm, where the local community is
invited to find out more about the process
behind granting an environmental permit.
The full ‘draft decision’ document will
be available at the session, and includes
information on how previous concerns raised
during the consultation have been considered.
The environmental permit
relates to the impact of the facility on
the environment and on people’s health.
It does not relate to issues such as traffic
movements, visual impact, operating hours
and light pollution, all of which are covered
by the planning permission granted by Cardiff
Council on 9th June 2010.
Graham Hillier, Environment
Agency Wales’ Area Manager for South East
Wales says: “Our positive ‘draft decision’
means we can see no reason, at this stage,
why Viridor should not be given an environmental
permit.
We have carried out
a rigorous investigation over the last 13
months and received specialist advice on
health related matters. We have also received
detailed information from Viridor to show
that plans are in place to operate this
facility to the highest environmental standards.
At this stage we do
not anticipate that the facility will cause
any significant risk to the health of people
who live nearby, or to the environment.
The next few weeks will
be spent in one last round of public consultation
to ensure that the final decision is watertight.”
