The Future is Renewable: Declaration for the International Conference for Renewable Energies

This declaration was elaborated at the international workshop "Roadmap to Renewables 2004" (Bad Honnef, 5-8 October 2003) organised by Heinrich Böll Foundation, German NGO Forum on Environment and Development and WWF International. It is intended as the starting point for a NGO position for the Renewables 2004 conference.

The declaration is the common position of CURES (Citizens United for Renewable Energy and Sustainability), a network of NGOs created to monitor the energy-related international processes in the follow-up of the Johannesburg Summit.

Learning for work, Citizenship and Sustainability

We, the participants in “Learning for Work, Citizenship and Sustainability”, a UNESCO meeting of international experts on technical and vocational education and training, are agreed that, since education is considered the key to effective development strategies, technical and vocational education and training (TVET) must be the master key that can alleviate poverty, promote peace, conserve the environment, improve the quality of life for all and help achieve sustainable development. Our conclusion was reached following deliberations among 122 technical experts from Member States, intergovernmental and non-governmental organizations and industry who met in Bonn, Germany, from 25 to 28 October 2004, on the threshold of the United Nations Decade of Education for Sustainable Development, to assess progress since the Second International Congress on and Vocational Education, held in Seoul, Republic of Korea, in April 1999.

United Nations Decade of Education for Sustainable Development

We, participants at an International Experts Meeting on Learning for Work, Citizenship and Sustainability, meeting in Bonn Germany, 25-28 October 2004, elaborated the following range of activities which we would like UNESCO to take into account when developing an Action Plan for TVET and Sustainable Development to guide its actions in the TVET sector during the United Nations Decade of Education for Sustainable Development (2005-2014).

Orienting Technical and Vocational Education and Training for Sustainable Development

A discussion paper One of the main functions of the UNESCO-UNEVOC International Centre is knowledge management and information sharing. Particular attention is given to promoting best practices and innovations in technical and vocational education and training (TVET) and education for the world of work, with special reference to meeting the needs of developing countries, countries in transition and countries in a post-conflict situation.

The Centre also seeks to help bridge the gap that often exists between research, policy and practice in the area of education for the world of work.
